Why does it happen?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when your skin produces excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This overproduction is often triggered by sun exposure, which stimulates melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) as a defense mechanism. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or caused by birth control, can also lead to melasma, a common form of hyperpigmentation. Inflammation from acne or skin injuries can leave behind dark marks called post- inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can linger for months if not treated properly.
Dark circles, on the other hand, have multiple causes. Genetics plays a major role—if your family tends to have thinner skin under the eyes, blood vessels can become more visible, creating a shadowed effect. Age also contributes because the skin around the eyes becomes even thinner and loses fat and collagen over time. Lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and even allergies can make dark circles more pronounced, making you look tired even when you ’ re well-rested.
Environmental and lifestyle habits can worsen both conditions. Excess sun exposure without proper SPF protection can deepen hyperpigmentation and make dark circles appear darker due to UV damage. Poor diet, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can also compromise skin health, leading to dullness and discoloration. Over time, if not managed with proper care and protection, these concerns can become more stubborn and harder to fade.

How can you treat it?
Brightening treatments like LED therapy, SQT bio microneedling, and vitamin C facials can help fade dark spots and even out tone. For dark circles, hydrating eye treatments, gentle massage, and targeted skincare can bring back radiance. Daily SPF use is non-negotiable to prevent further discoloration.
